What is gum disease?

Gum or periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that attacks the structures that support your teeth, including your gums and jawbone. The sooner our Castle Pines dentists catch and treat gum disease, the better it is for your oral health.

Without treatment, a gum infection continues to spread and worsen, gradually destroying supporting structures and eventually causing tooth loss.

Gingivitis (Mild Gum Disease) Treatment

In its earliest stage, gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis treatment in Castle Pines involves a thorough dental cleaning to remove all the plaque and tartar that has collected on your teeth and below the gum line.

During the cleaning, our hygienist looks for problem areas where you need to focus your oral hygiene efforts and provides helpful tips for getting the most out of your brushing and flossing routine.

Periodontitis (Advanced Gum Disease) Treatment

If we don’t treat gingivitis promptly, it will advance to periodontitis. The first step in treating periodontitis is a non-surgical approach called scaling and root planing.

Scaling involves carefully removing built-up plaque and tartar from your tooth surfaces, and planing smoothes the root surfaces of your teeth. This step removes rough spots where bacteria can collect and helps promote reattachment of gum tissue to the roots.

Your hygienist may additionally prescribe oral or topical antibiotics to further protect you against infection. In extreme cases, gum surgery may be needed.
